Breast cancers have been the most frequently diagnosed cancers in England since 1996 when the number of new diagnoses first exceeded those for lung cancer. Of all women with breast cancer, 5% to 10% may have a germline mutation of the genes BRCA1 and BRCA2 which is more common in women of Jewish ancestry. In 2018, it is estimated that approximately 15% of all cancer deaths among women were due to breast cancer and the number of new cases of cancer in England continues to rise. The good news is almost 9 in 10 women survive breast cancer for five years or more. In order to improve breast cancer outcomes and survival, early detection is critical. Here in the U.K., limited resources are a problem within an overstretched NHS system that continues to push painful and unnecessary mammograms.
Self-Check It is important to check regularly all parts of your breast, armpits, and collarbone for any unusual changes, as listed below.
· A change in the size or shape
· Redness or a rash on the skin or around the nipple
· Discharge that comes from the nipple without squeezing
· Swelling in your armpit or around your collarbone
· A lump or thickening that feels different to the rest of the breast tissue
· Puckering or dimpling of the skin (like orange skin)
· Nipple becoming inverted or change in its position
· Constant pain in your breast or armpit
Know Your Risk Factors
Increasing age is the most important risk factor for most cancers. Other risk factors for breast cancer include the following: · Family health history
· Major inheritance susceptibility - Germline mutation of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes and other breast cancer susceptibility genes
· Alcohol intake
· Breast tissue density (mammographic)
· Estrogen (endogenous)
· Hormone therapy IHRT) history - combination estrogen plus progestin hormone replacement therapy
· Obesity (postmenopausal)
· Personal history of breast cancer
· Personal history of benign breast disease (BBD) (proliferative forms of BBD)
· Radiation exposure to breast/chest
